Kenyan Runner Eliud Kipchoge runs the 2020 Olympic marathon in an astonishing 2:08:38. This earns him a consecutive gold medal win from the 2016 and 2020 Olympics. This is only the third time ever to have been done in the history of the Olympics. Euclid is an extremely talented runner and the first to break the 2-hour marathon barrier.
Mason Liu, a 39-year-old who has run the marathon 3 times said that normal marathon runners like him run “generally only half of his speed”. As it probably sounds, running a 2-hour marathon is an incredible feat. “ I think it represents the highest level of human beings,” says Mr. Liu when asked what he thought about Kipchoge’s performance. Of course, getting these results and training for any marathon takes time and effort. A lot of it. Mr. Liu states you need is physical strength and time to train and practice. What keeps marathon runners motivated throughout training and running the marathon though? Mr. Liu thinks part of the fun comes from physiology. He says the dopamine created from exercising creates a sense of pleasure, and that reaching one’s own goals feels rewarding. He also says that everyone has their own characteristics and limitations, so achieving anyone achieving their own goals is considered a feat.
(might add a paragraph with some of Eliud’s other accomplishments)
Eliud Kipchoge also has many other world records alongside this outstanding Olympic performance. He holds the fastest official marathon time, a staggering 2:01:39, and he was the first person to break the 2-hour barrier for the marathon. (the sub 2-hour marathon was done with multiple pacers and lasers projecting optimal speed) Kipchoge is certainly not just an ordinary Olympic gold medalist. He has a strong history of breaking and setting world records.
Marathon running has always been one of the toughest sports. This 26.2 mile long run pushes many to the limit. Most people are happy with just running one marathon in their life, but extraordinary runners like Eliud Kipchoge continue to defy all expectations and break more records.
