COVID-19 safety
By Ann Lu
Every day we face choices such as, what should we do today or what should I wear to school today? These are some examples of small problems we have come to expect, but unexpectedly, the whole world faces the global problem of the Coronavirus, or COVID-19. Globally, this virus has killed more than 500,000 people and infected more than 15,000,000. The greatest threat that COVID-19 poses is that it is highly contagious. After someone is infected, it passes to someone else and keeps on spreading. Here are three things you can do to prevent COVID-19 from coming into your home.
1. You can wear a mask
Wearing a mask is super important because it can reduce how far sneezes spread. According to CBS8 “The slow-motion video is graphic. But, according to the researcher behind it, it's an accurate look at what happens when someone sneezes, spraying droplets as far as 27 feet away”. (Originally posted by the Journal of the American Medical Association). It’s best to wear a mask because if you sneeze it can spray up to 27 feet away.
Wearing a mask cannot just save you, but it can help others too. According to LIVE SCIENCE,“With face masks, the chance of infection or transmission was 3% with a mask compared with 17% without a mask, a reduction of more than 80%. And for eye protection, the chance of infection or transmission was 6% with protection and 16% without.” If you want to find more info on how important it is to wear a mask click here Face masks may reduce COVID-19 spread by 85%, WHO …
2. Social distance
Social distancing is also a very effective way of not getting or spreading COVID-19. People’s sneeze spread radius is 27 feet, but if they wear a mask the range will be reduced. The minimum distance for safe social distancing is three feet. Usually if you're going to the grocery store or other public places, you will always see tape measuring out six feet. Stay in the boundaries and you will be safe. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus by maintaining 1 meter or 3 feet distance between people, especially those who are coughing and sneezing. 3. Washing your hands
Washing your hands is the most effective way of getting rid of germs. It’s best to wash your hands after you’ve played outside, gone to the bathroom and before you eat. If you are against washing your hands, think about this: you play outside, get your hands super dirty, and then you touch the food you eat. This is how you could get sick. Meal after meal, germs keep entering your body that you want to avoid at all costs. If you're on the go, hand sanitizer is the next best option. If you have access to running water and soap, wash your hands.
There are 5 easy steps to washing your hands:
“Hand washing with soap for 20 seconds is one of the single most important practices to protect yourself, your family, and your community,” says Matthew Freeman, a professor of epidemiology and global health at Emory University, in a Popular Science article.
